Carbon dioxide is mainly used in gaseous form. It is obtained industrially by cracking hydrocarbon gases or as a by-product of ammonia production. Carbon dioxide does not support life and is toxic at high concentrations. Like nitrogen and argon, carbon dioxide is capable of causing an oxygen-depleted atmosphere with the risk of asphyxiation.
