Nitrogen inerting, also known as blanketing or padding, is the maintenance of a dry inert atmosphere over chemicals during storage, reaction or processing.

The inert properties of liquid nitrogen are used in the blanketing process where a chemical liberates a flammable vapour or a chemical degrades or polymerises on contact with air.
