Liquid NitrogenFacts about Liquid Nitrogen
Liquid Nitrogen can be used in either gaseous or liquid form, depending on the application. Nitrogen gas is colourless, odourless, non-toxic and almost totally inert. It constitutes 78% of the atmospheric air, but it is an asphyxiant if levels increase to a point where insufficient oxygen is present. This is particularly important to remember when working in confined spaces with nitrogen. Click here for more information on oxygen deficiencies
In liquid form it is a refrigerated liquified gas with a boiling point of -196°C. Link to Liquid Nitrogen Safety Data Sheet
Applications of Liquid NitrogenNitrogen in its liquid form is used as a cryogen for many applications where very low temperatures or rapid temperature reduction is required. Some of the common applications where liquid nitrogen is used are:
Applications of Gaseous NitrogenThe inert property of gaseous nitrogen enables it to be used for applications where a substance needs to be protected from oxidation or combustion by atmospheric air, or from contamination by moisture. Some of the common applications where gaseous nitrogen is used are:
